Clients are from Venus, Consultants from Mars: A Guide to Effective Management of Consultants

    Nov 6, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM (ET)

Clients are from Venus, Consultants from Mars: A Guide to Effective Management of Consultants

    Speaker: Michael Ellegood, P.E.

In today’s public works environment, the use of consultants to provide engineering services is endemic. Despite the interdependency of public client and consultant, their worlds, business models, accounting systems, and legal environments are all very different. Even the fundamental aspects of how public agencies and consultants are motivated and how they interact with other agencies and competitors differ.

This webinar showcases these differences so that client and consultant can better understand each other’s operating environment. This improved understanding will result in better communication and mutual expectations.

    Topics to be covered include:

    • The respective business models of public client and consultant
    • The real financial world of the consultant
    • How clients perceive consultants, the hierarchy of consultants.
    • Tips on consultant selection
    • What clients expect of consultants
    • How to deal with an underperforming consultant

Michael Ellegood is a practicing Civil Engineer and has managed major projects. He was Public Works Director, County Engineer and Transportation Director for Maricopa County, Arizona, as well as Chief Engineer and General Manager of the Flood Control District of Maricopa County. He has been a consulting engineer and a senior manager in the Parsons Corporation, Tudor Engineering Company, and T.Y. Lin International.  Mr. Ellegood has also been active in the Arizona Society of Professional Engineers and served as ASPE’s president. Mr. Ellegood is a retired Army combat veteran and served in Vietnam.
